Yen Press Fruits Basket Collector's Edition (Vol.1) vs TOKYOPOP Fruits Basket (Volumes 1 and 2) | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
This is a comparison video between the Yen Press Fruits Basket Collector's Edition release (Vol.1) and the Original TOKYOPOP Fruits Basket release (Volumes 1 and 2). There is quite a bit that is different, but the overall story is the same. The only thing to really make note of is that the Collector's Edition has been re-translated. The character's still say the same things and get across the same messages, they are just worded slightly differently. For example, instead of this: (TOKYOPOP version) Chapter 3 Yuki: Wow...You've worked wonders on this kitchen! Tohru: I did my best! Dinner is ready! You'll get this: (Yen Press version) Chapter 3 Yuki: Wow...I can't believe you took that gross kitchen and made it spick-and-span. Tohru: I did my best! Dinner's ready too! So yeah, same thing being said, just in a slightly different way. Differences are: -The 'waking up' pages at the beginning of the TOKYOPOP volumes are not in the Collector's Editions -The 'thank you' pages are different -The creator commentaries are not in the Collector's Editions -The 'character introduction' page and 'the story so far' page are not in the Collector's Edition -Ever-so slightly different translation Similarities are: -The story, characters, and relationships are the same -You'll still get the same feels -Despite an ever-so slightly different translation, the messages, meanings, and morals, are still the same

I'm finishing my collection with the TokyoPop editions, so I finish in the same collection I have, but I would miss the creator commentaries.

This is the fourth translation into English for Fruits Basket: Kodansha Japan, Tokyopop, Chuang Yi and now Yen Press. I'm collecting the Chuang Yi (Singapore) manga to compare their translation with Tokyopop's.
Here's the post about volume one - http://mangaanotherstory.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/fruits-basket-volume-1-comparison.html
Chuang Yi
Yuki: Amazing...! You've worked wonders with this kitchen!
Tohru: Nothing a little elbow grease can't fix! Dinner will be ready soon!
Hopefully one day I'll do an updated blog post with the collector's editions added in. Thanks for taking the time to do this. -
I wasn't really sure whether or not to buy the collection editons, since I already have them in my own langauge. But your review helped me decide to give the collector ed a go. I am bit sad to hear that there are no extras in the collection ed, but I am big furuba nut plus my own manga are even smaller then the tokyopop ed. So I am glad you pointed out the size difference. Anyhow thank you for the video.

Perhaps my most favorite series. I own the tokyopop editions and contemplating on getting the collectors editions. I like that they are bigger but the material and color of the covers seems very cheap and might get scuffs more easily. What do u think?
