When Joe Zawinul landed his global hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, a song he had written for the Adderly Sextet, Miles Davis said about him: "In order to write this type of music you have to be free inside of yourself and be Josef Zawinul with two beige kids, a black wife, two pianos, from Vienna, a Cancer and cliché-free.." Davis hired Zawinul as a composer and keyboarder for his albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. But when Miles offered him to join his band, Zawinul refused, maybe because he thought that two powerful individuals like them wouldn't have attuned well in the long run. "Miles is the father," said Zawinul, "and we're his sons. But the son, when he sits on his father's shoulders, can always see farther." Zawinul made a lasting impact on jazz when he founded Weather Report with Wayne Shorter in 1971. Like the weather, the group's music was subject to constant change. In Weather Report, Zawinul also took advantage of the possibilities opened up by new electronic equipment. Propelled by his formula "play electric, sound acoustic", Weather Report managed to attract a devoted following from both the jazz and rock communities and received worldwide acclaim.
