4. In North America we have the mindset that everyone should get their own house in the suburbs, you drive into the city for work and then you drive back to the suburbs at the end of the workday. You cannot function in society without a car and we only end up going into the city to work. In Japan, people have the opportunity to only be a short train ride away from where they work and most people don't even own cars in urban areas. Because of this they end up spending most of their time in the city and they end up with such a great culture and sense of community in their neighborhoods. In North America, we commute back to our houses in the suburbs and fence ourselves off from the rest of the world. That's why North American cities are dying.
