There has been a continuing controversy surrounding a 31,670 m2 US Army base located in central Tokyo amidst residential towers and office buildings. The base includes a helipad, offices for a US military newspaper, a PX, hotel for US-authorized personnel, and US military intelligence agency offices. The helipad serves as a base for US army personnel from neighboring headquarters in Yokota, Atsugi and Yokosuka, as well as the US embassy nearby. Residents of this affluent ward of Tokyo are intensifying their campaign to have the land returned to the city, even as the Tokyo city government has conceded to allow the base to remain. On this week's INFocus we will interview a lead activist with the Action Committee to Get Rid of Azabu Heliport, and will also include interviews with affected residents, the local ward mayor, and security analysts.
