My second most played PS2 racing game, which would probably be my second most played PS2 game period. Number one is GT4, and that game is well known. This one though... I don't think many people ever played - or even heard of - this game. Why do a playthrough of this game that is super long? Because this game doesn't get the credit I feel it should. Because there seems to be a grand total of 2 other playthroughs here on YT - both uncommentated, both skip around a bit. Many more famous games have been covered from front to back and everyone knows, this offers something different. What would I be covering with something like GT4 or some newer game? Sorry, it's not my style. This game was originally released in 2003. Think about that. 2003 was also the year NFS Underground was released, the game probably most responsible for kickstarting the customization thing in games. Forza didn't even exist. GT4 was just a delay or fifty away. For the record - TXR3 also has a (primitive) paint job editor, similar to what Forza has now. This game deserves credit. Not even NFSU style vinyls, but rather whatever you want you can make it providing the low res PS2 can handle it of course. Car selection may have dwindled from TXR Zero, this game's predecessor, but they also were licensed. Im still mixed on it, I'll miss the various Hondas (not a huge Honda guy, but not having them in a Japanese racing game is... weird.) and the BMW M3 for example, but hey, this game has the friggen De Tomaso Pantera! How many games can say that? With the abundant customization however, I don't find an issue. Best part of that customization I should also add, is the lack of need to "rice" your car. I'm not a fan of the style, I prefer a cleaner look, so my cars will reflect it. In NFSU for example, I had to make my car look like crap because the game determined I needed to have certain cool points or whatever. And really, it does make those games seem more dated, as that style is quite out of date. Even the AI in this game has a tendency to keep the varied customization going - some cars are tasteful, some are well... not my thing. It makes it interesting. Then you add in the SP system. Something that on anything other than a highway racing game makes no sense at all - but here it works to nearly perfection. Races past the baby stage are almost always intense in one way or another. Terror is being raced by a guy in a Ford GT with no Tollbooth around. LOL And then, for the final word. This game will be written off by many, and was, as a grind. TBH, my favorite parts of games like Gran Turismo and Forza are the start. When you have no money, and an upgrade feels like it's more than what it is. The excitement of 6 HP, because that's all the money you have. That is something this game does amazingly IMO. Yes, you end up with the typically stacks of cash you will never spend, but not for a long while. And that keeps you racing. It's not as flashy, it's not as well known, it's not as impressive technically as Gran Turismo - but it's a damn fine game IMO. Follow me like a stalker!
