Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 : Welcome to Tokyo. (Ep. 1) | Tokyo

My second most played PS2 racing game, which would probably be my second most played PS2 game period. Number one is GT4, and that game is well known. This one though... I don't think many people ever played - or even heard of - this game. Why do a playthrough of this game that is super long? Because this game doesn't get the credit I feel it should. Because there seems to be a grand total of 2 other playthroughs here on YT - both uncommentated, both skip around a bit. Many more famous games have been covered from front to back and everyone knows, this offers something different. What would I be covering with something like GT4 or some newer game? Sorry, it's not my style. This game was originally released in 2003. Think about that. 2003 was also the year NFS Underground was released, the game probably most responsible for kickstarting the customization thing in games. Forza didn't even exist. GT4 was just a delay or fifty away. For the record - TXR3 also has a (primitive) paint job editor, similar to what Forza has now. This game deserves credit. Not even NFSU style vinyls, but rather whatever you want you can make it providing the low res PS2 can handle it of course. Car selection may have dwindled from TXR Zero, this game's predecessor, but they also were licensed. Im still mixed on it, I'll miss the various Hondas (not a huge Honda guy, but not having them in a Japanese racing game is... weird.) and the BMW M3 for example, but hey, this game has the friggen De Tomaso Pantera! How many games can say that? With the abundant customization however, I don't find an issue. Best part of that customization I should also add, is the lack of need to "rice" your car. I'm not a fan of the style, I prefer a cleaner look, so my cars will reflect it. In NFSU for example, I had to make my car look like crap because the game determined I needed to have certain cool points or whatever. And really, it does make those games seem more dated, as that style is quite out of date. Even the AI in this game has a tendency to keep the varied customization going - some cars are tasteful, some are well... not my thing. It makes it interesting. Then you add in the SP system. Something that on anything other than a highway racing game makes no sense at all - but here it works to nearly perfection. Races past the baby stage are almost always intense in one way or another. Terror is being raced by a guy in a Ford GT with no Tollbooth around. LOL And then, for the final word. This game will be written off by many, and was, as a grind. TBH, my favorite parts of games like Gran Turismo and Forza are the start. When you have no money, and an upgrade feels like it's more than what it is. The excitement of 6 HP, because that's all the money you have. That is something this game does amazingly IMO. Yes, you end up with the typically stacks of cash you will never spend, but not for a long while. And that keeps you racing. It's not as flashy, it's not as well known, it's not as impressive technically as Gran Turismo - but it's a damn fine game IMO. Follow me like a stalker! @empty box Hey. Great review. Just want to shine some info on this game. This is what you call Wangan racing, its a race on the a stretch of high way in japan. quite popular in japan even to this day, mainly on what is called the "Kanjo". You win pulling a gap on your opponent just like this game. That's probably why the "SP" bar is there.
-
why didn't you get the toyota chaser?
-
You can only have five cars in your garage. Is there any other way to have more than five cars in this game? If not, then that's just lame!
-
So whats the best/fastest car to buy when you first start?
-
I SO REMEMBER THIS!! I remember only playing it cuz I liked the turning blinkers 😂
-
Imagine if they made a new version of this game for Xbox One/PS4... No corny story or anything just basically this exact same game with tons of cars, miles of highways, better graphics, and more races. Everybody would buy it
-
Is this on an emulator?
-
This is still one of the best racing games I have ever played
-
Need for Speed Carbon implemented a similar mechanic, "The SP meter" in their downhill races. Closest thing I've seen to what TXR series has done.
-
Fun Fact: Rolling Guy is based on NO GOOD. It's a Street Racing team in Japan that runs only Honda Civic Hatches.
Even the Rolling Guy and NO GOOD logos use the same, Black/Red/White color in their logo.. -
When I went to daycare I always played this game on the ps2. I was a stupid kid and didn't even know what I was doing. I wish I could play it again now that it makes sense to me

This gem of a game is ridiculously realistic for being "just" a freeway racing game. This game far exceeds the realism that the Need For Speed games offered, with far more customization than just cosmetic mods.

I used to absolutely LOVE the TXR series... I still wish they would make another one. I beat the first 2 on Dreamcast. Zero came out on PS2 which was TXR2 only... they dumbed it down -_- actually made the game easier because people complained about the difficulty. TXR3 was the first of the series to actually get car licenses... and it had a friggin PANTERA making it great in my book... I remember finding a "cheat" for this game... that had something to do with running a free roam basically... ejecting the disk and it would go into auto pilot sorta... then just let it run over night. There are a bunch of upgrades or adjustments you can do to a car after its been driven like 150 miles or something like that... (number of miles probably wrong) and it made any car really fun to play with... Thanks EB for reminding me of this game... I think I must go play this again! lol 10+ years later.....

Hey emptybox is that really all the makes of cars you can choose from? If so id rather not order it from ebay. Zero had way more cars even if they didnt have permission at that time to use the actual names of makes and models
-
any way you're gonna give enthusia a try?

The S14 is a good starter car. Ya should of started with the Z31 or the FC3S though. I'm not sure if Genki has made a TXR4 yet, but they did make a sort of 'sequel' called Import Tuner Challenge for the Xbox360. They upgraded some things about the game, particularly the AI and graphics. But the game is missing a lot of content that TXR3 had. Mainly it doesn't have Nagoya or Osaka, and the number of both cars you can buy and rivals you race are much lower. Kind of a dissapointment as it was made in 2006, and there are no plans for another game yet.

I remember this game blowing my mind on the Dreamcast....On the PS2 i just played the TXR Drift 2....Played it a lot along with GT 4.... great game...

Happy to see someone doing a LP of this game. I lived on this game and TXR0 when I was growing up, and have wanted to do an LP of this for a while. Seeing yours has me wanting to play again.
