Hi Diana, the 'mexican' heart is actually called The Sacred Heart (of Jesus and/or Mary). It is actually depicted as a Christian/Catholic religious art, symbolising the wounded heart of Jesus and/or Mary (his mother).The 'rays' above the heart are actually flames which symbolises love transcending beyond the physical realm. For Jesus, his sacred heart has a crown of thorns (suffering and sacrifice for Mankind and God), while his mother Mary, has a sword pierced to it (suffering and heartbreak for her son).
The item you got there is pretty much stylised so I don't think it is any way offensive or appropriation (for me personally). I think it's a cute and cool item. But it helps to know the history of the symbol, just for awareness.
