Catalyst: Tokyo Flood Prevention - Exploring the Japanese capital's vast labyrinth of underground flood defences Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/journeymanpictures Go to the Journeyman Science playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlGSlkijht5iXbPX7d_oTP47c9C3kArQ0 Fifty metres beneath the world’s largest metropolis – the Japanese capital, Tokyo – is an amazing underworld river system. 6.4km of tunnels, colossal water tanks, massive pillars and giant pumps are part of an immense coordinated effort to pump floodwaters out into Tokyo Bay, and protect the city’s 35 millions inhabitants from devastating floods. But with year-round heavy rains seeming increasingly frequent, Tokyo’s flood management – already the most advanced in the world – is being pushed to even greater lengths to protect the population. Mark Horstman goes underground to explore the gargantuan underground world of Tokyo’s flood defence systems. Is this true or science fiction

RIP to is headphone/earbud users. I have to say, the Japanese love architecture and engineering. Just to bad most of the Japanese are afraid of the opposite sex. Honestly, if the Japanese citizens would learn to populate, then they'll be fine. And, it would be great for Western cultures to learn from their love for architecture and engineering, we'll need the Japanese when we go to the moon again, mars and beyond.
-
They are still the people who put the "Must work or the plant melts down" generators in the basement 50 feet from the most tsunami prone waters in the world. I don't care what anybody has to say, Ray Charles would have seen the problem with his eye closed. They're no better than anybody else, all they cared about was the money. And now the Pacific Ocean is dying.
-
This is just one more example of the resilience of the Japanese people.

2:19 i really thought he was gonna hit his head

maybe this kind of technology can survive "the great flood".,

Compare that to the mud and sticks used to protect New Orleans, the California Delta and other areas. Amador county California has a dam more than 120 years old that is holding back water contaminated with cyanide waste from gold mining. No money to fix anything. It was all spent of wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and now Syria. $8.5 trillion went missing from the Pentagon since 1995. Good luck trying to arrest someone and seizing that money in their bank account.

Do we need the creepy music for this vid, guy?
-
Lol and they made movies about flooding in NY.
-
The Japanese appreciate engineering. In America engineering is an expensive annoyance, please go away.
-
New Orleans really needs something like this. Not sure if the type of land they're on would allow this to be built, especially at the scale Tokyo's flood defense system is on, but it's something to think about.

Wow
-
Will it work as well in an emergency as did Fukushima's automatic system. We do amazing engineering, but sometimes miss things.
-
holy shit thats amazing
