Tokyo Earthquake, main quake as it happened 2011/03/11 ~15:00 local | Tokyo

Tokyo Earthquake, viewed from the third floor of my apartment in Minami-Asagaya, Suginami-ku Tokyo. This only covers about the last half of the intense stuff, total time lasted over three minutes. The motion started off as usual with side to side jerking but finished with more of a sinking and rising feeling with some side to side motion as well. All in all it was a huge jolt of adrenaline and I'm thankful my friends here are all safe. *The siren is a useful relic from Japan's history. Used to alert people to air raids or bombing, the city now employs the system to broadcast emergency messages to citizens. It also serves to play the city's song at 5pm every night. **Media** This video may be linked to or used for broadcasting under the condition that credit be given to "Dolan O'Neill" and that you contact me of your useage. 東京都杉並区成田東5丁目 rough address of where the video was taken.

Tokyo, where I took this video is west of the Chiba Pininsula, and because of that Tokyo and Tokyo Bay were shielded from that tusnami, though, it never reached that far. I did go back into the Military to help lead and support releif efforts throughout 東北 (Touhoku) North Eastern Japan and more spcficially 宮城県 (Miyagi-Ken(Prefecture)) were the areas closest to the epicenter of the Earthquake. However, there were other areas that were affected as well.

Were you anywhere near the ocean?

Thanks! Are you living in Japan permanently?
-
Anytime! Feel free to ask anything! Along with the pedestrian crossings and city songs another example is that each train station has it's own song as well. Though this is more to help those not paying attention to subconsciously know that they are at their stop haha.

Thanks! How interesting. I didn't know this. I was in Japan for a week, but did not notice these city songs. I did, however, notice that each pedestrian crossing had a song that went with it :)

I don't know much about the song itself, but each ward and usually city has it's own song much like it's own crest. The song plays every night at 5pm though on some nights during the year it plays at 4pm. Each town seems to determine when to play their own songs at either of these two times. There are never any words, just a simple melody that I'm sure was created several decades ago and remains unchanged!
-
Can you tell me more about the city's song that is played at 5pm everyday? How long does it play for? What is the song saying?
-
Who would've known that it would be the last time that he would be in that place until it got destroyed from the tsunami. I wish I was a bird so you could escape any natural disaster.
