In the manga Kaneki gets stabbed through the head and that is how he loses his memory also due to other circumstances (I won't say spoilers ;) ) but in all honesty that's not the biggest spoilers. I hope they don't fuck it up in season 3. Season 2 wasn't good at all compared to the manga which was godlike. They didn't add any of the foreshadows or symbolism that makes the TG series so good. please read the manga
