The ravens are so prolific at Kamakura that they even have statues of them, and an official raven keeper too. But the main attraction is what used to be the largest seated metal statue of Buddha in the world, until Hong Kong built a larger one on Lantau island. A 15th-century tsunami destroyed the temple that once housed the Great Buddha of Kamakura, but the bronze statue survived and has remained outdoors ever since. This iconic Daibutsu is arguably amongst the few images which have come to represent Japan in the world's collective imagination.
