The open rip jeans are fine, I have the same pair the only thing I would recommend is to wear something a little shorter (as in upper body wear) so you can see where the rips cut off, thus doing this it makes the rips look smaller because if you have a shirt drooping over them you can't really tell where they cut off, it makes the rips look bigger and looks as if you are showing more leg.

I think those type of jeans work better for women to be honest. I think having a very distressed pair of denim is just a nice versatile piece of clothing that is somewhere between shorts and regular jeans, comfort and formality-wise. I'd say put money back into getting another pair but just less distressed or DIY.
