NUS, NTU Singapore Top 100 Universities World Ranking "Little red dot" (or "Little Red Dot") is an epithet for the nation of Singapore. It describes the manner in which the main and subsidiary islands comprising the Republic, with a total land area of no more than 704 km2 (270 sq mi), are marked on many world maps. Originally, it was apparently used to refer to Singapore in a disparaging manner by former Indonesian President B.J. Habibie (though this was denied by him), but has come to be used by both Singaporean politicians and ordinary citizens with pride and a sense of the nation's success despite its physical limitations. There is no doubt that the "Little red dot" is not so small afterall: Singapore has become one of the top-scoring countries on the PISA tests. Two of Singapore's universities are now among the top 100 universities in the world, according to the latest edition of Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In particular, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has jumped over 80 spots in a university ranking to reach 86th place in the London-based rankings. The National University of Singapore (NUS) climbed 11 positions and is now ranked 29th. In 2012, three Asian cities made the top ten of the EIU/Citi global competitiveness study. Singapore ranked a highly impressive 3rd, Hong Kong matched Paris to finish 4th, and Tokyo placed ahead of Zurich to rate 6th. In the same month, Seoul reached a new high of 8th in the Global Cities Index. These four are now established top dozen cities in the world, and have ambitions to match. Hong Kong and Singapore have surpassed Paris and Tokyo as financial centres with global reach, and are now more central to circuits of exchange between the largest multi-national producer services firms. The pair have placed a clear 3rd and 4th in the Global Financial Centres Index in all 11 editions since 2007. Singapore reached a highly impressive 3rd in the EIU's benchmark on global city competitiveness in 2012, outflanking Paris and Tokyo for financial maturity and institutional effectiveness. In terms of net international reserves per capita, Singapore has far and away the highest - more than double that of the second-placed country, triple that of the third-placed country, and quadruple that of the fourth-placed country.
