Night Bus Review - JR Seishun Dream from Tokyo to Kyoto and MK 302 from Kyoto to Tokyo | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
Here I will review my experience in taking night buses from Tokyo to Kyoto and back. This is meant to give travelers that might be considering riding a night bus a feel for what it'll be like. This is from the evenings of June 12th and 13th, 2009. I took the JR Seishun Dream overnight bus Tokyo-Kyoto (5000yen) there. And I took the MK 302 overnight bus Kyoto-Tokyo (6000yen) back. The JR bus I found by going to Tokyo station and buying from the Yaesu exit Expressway bus terminal. The MK bus I found online using Rakuten. I've made a video for how to do that that I'll upload later and put a link here.

Nice trick. Wanted to sub you, but already subbed you, lol. After watching this video, i'm considering to do this to visit my friend in kyoto, instead of just staying in tokyo. Seems easier than going with the overnight train and 18 kippu.I just hope they have enough capacity on hanami... Greetings from Switzerland

Hi. I was wandering whats best way to get to Kyoto from Narita airprt. is it expensive for train? are they extremely packed? please reaply, thnkx.
-
@TheEndlessRoad Sure - you can reserve it online, but I'm not sure if it's possible in English. I reserved mine on the Japanese website Rakuten.

Ok thank you for your help ! I agree with you, they should definitely pay you :p

It's definitely worth it - even just for one day. I highly recommend renting a bike and just roaming about Kyoto a bit. Even just a few hours, it's a nice town. If you have very little time, I recommend visiting Kiyomizu-dera and the Gion area.

Glad the video helped you! I don't remember having to show anything specific, but yeah - printing out the email should do the trick. If I remember correctly, they had me registered in the system, so I just told them my name, and they checked me off. Maybe as a foreigner, we stand out quite a bit. Not sure if I can make any more reviews as I don't get a chance to get out of Tokyo very often, but I'll definitely do it if I have the chance. ^^ They should pay me for it. :P Have a safe trip~~

Thanks! I just booked a ticket for and MK bus on rakuten. I was hesitating between different companies but I chose MK because of your review. It's hard to find reviews of the different night buses between Tokyo and Kyoto :/ I you care to do it again with different companies next time :p By the way I tried to decipher the email rakuten sent me and (I think) it says I have to show "予約詳細画面" on departure day. So what, I print the email and show it to them? Thanks!

Thanks for watching always man!

The buses from the airport are great! They cost about the same amount as going from Tokyo to Kyoto though. :P But whenever you're tired after a long trip, the best way to get into Tokyo from Narita are the limousine buses. :D

Haha - it's only exciting the first time really... There was a guy sitting next to me who said he goes back to his hometown in Kyoto to take care of his mom and dad every weekend by bus! Wow - really good son, right??

Great video!

Nice video diary, thanks...
-
My recommendation - do the bus there, and the train back.
-
ah ok, i might consider the bus then

I kinda like the buses 'cause they make you get up early. You get to see more of the place that way, and in the end, I always feel like I got more out of my trip. But Shinkansen is definitely good to try once! :)

kool video..i wanna go to Osaka from Tokyo for maybe 3 days during my 1 week trip to Japan..i was thinking about busing it for the night since its the cheapest way, but i decided to do it quick n easy with a Shinkansen..it may be like 150 bucks each way, but it'll be worth it haha
