Among other tracks, the album featured Davis' interpretations of two contemporary pop songs: Cyndi Laupers "Time After Time" and Michael Jacksons "Human Natute". During the recording sessions, Darryl Jones (A/K/A "The Munch:" Bass) introduced Sting to his longtime idol Miles Davis. Sting was startled when Davis asked him if he could speak French, and since he did, to translate the Miranda Warning into French and yell it into the microphone against a backing track. Miranda Warning is a warning given by police in the United States to criminal suspects in police custody, or in a custodial situation, before they are interrogated : You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you? The Miranda warnings were mandated by the 1966 United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Miranda v. Arizona as a means of protecting a criminal suspect's Fifth Amendment right to avoid coercive self-incrimination (see right to silence). The reading of the Miranda warning might be omitted during arrest, such as if the evidence is already sufficient to indict, or if the suspect is talkative and volunteers information (without being asked). The admissibility of conversations, as evidence, is judged on a case-by-case basis, subject to appeal.
