Madrid is on a three-city shortlist alongside Tokyo and Istanbul. It is the third Olympics in a row that Madrid has bid for, it lost out to London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Five of the 14 IOC panel members who will review Madrid's venues, finances and security plans during the four-day tour were here during the previous bids. New facilities have been added to the bid, such as the city's Las Ventas bullring, which would host basketball, the Retiro park, which would have a temporary venue for the beach volleyball and Real Madrid's training complex would see hockey and paralympic football played there. The La Peineta stadium, which would host the track and field events is yet to be completed. The 65,000-seater stadium was built in 1994 and is set for renovation and would then become the home of Atletico Madrid. The 18,000-capacity Aquatics Centre has been mired in delays, construction began in 2004, but was stopped in 2005, with work due to begin again in June 2014. The 14-person IOC panel has already visited Tokyo, and will go to Istanbul next week. The full International Olympic Committee will select the host city in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7th.
