I decided to take a look back at Tokyo Ghoul:re 2016. Its been a crazy year when you think about all that has happened. Kaneki Ken started off as someone willing to give up his life. Now he has a reason to live & a goal to accomplish. Arima Kishou & Eto both warmed the seat for Kaneki Ken to become the One Eyed King. Nimura Furuta also has stepped up as a character this year. I believe Eto is alive (surviving by eating her own flesh) not yet marking her presence know so she can observe what kaneki will do and maybe if he were to fail stepping in to see her dream come true. The reason I believe she lives in secret is to make kaneki believe that he is truly the last hope for the world to be set straight. Also we never SAW her die so it could be a Hide, black dog & devil ape situation.

The thing about a lot of main character is that they are bland or just a good guy in order to have people imprint themselves onto them, or to make the supporting cast more interesting. Think Gon from Hunter x Hunter and Naruto from Naruto. The thing that I found really interesting about Tokyo Ghoul was that they didn't do that, but instead made us actually love Kaneki's screentime with all he is. Kaneki is also a character that people can imprint on, and relate to, because of how easy it is to empathize with him, with all his flaws, pain, and personalities.

Kaneki Ken. QUESTIONABLY the greatest character in manga history along with Arima. -
It's also interesting that you mentioned sasaki's birthday was in april because generally spring is symbolized in literature as a time of rebirth, new beginnings, and hope while winter (arima and kaneki's birthdays) is usually symbolic if death, pain, and loneliness which really highlights what each of their characters represent. Do you think there's any significance in Arima and Kaneki having the same birthday, though? Because, knowing Ishida, there's no way that's just a coincidence, right?
