After her mother-in-law's funeral, Noriko (Setsuko Hara) tries to console her sister-in-law Kyôko (Kyôko Kagawa), who is highly disappointed with her brothers and sister due to their selfish behaviour. In this scene we can appreciate the greatness of Setsuko Hara, her deeply sad smile speaks wisely to our hearts to confirm that life is often disappointing. Ozu's cinema is not only poetry, art imitating life, it is just life itself.

It was announced yesterday that Setsuko Hara passed away on Sept. 5th at 95. Her death was unnoticed, as was her life for the last 50 years after she retired from cinema. I hope she had a happy life.

I know this is a cultural thing, but to non japanese eyes it does seem strange to see the Setsuko Hara character smile while saying the most terrible things
