JET Program Vlog #16b - married JETs - gay JETs | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
OK - I've been asked questions about both of these categories, and while I'm not the most qualified to address either group, I give you some advice if you're married or gay and coming to Japan with JET. The company I mention is http://www.interac.co.jp/recruit/ There are other Japan vloggers, like my buddy KansaiPJ, who are gay and living in Japan. So hunt around for more authoritative information on YT and do ask around at Tokyo orientation if you have concerns. Please feel free to leave a comment or ask a question and I'll do my best to seek out an answer from a better source than myself. More coming up this week, so stay tuned and thanks for watching. -Jason

Am I able to take my kids with me to Japan on the program? They are minors
-
I heard that same-sex internationally married couples are not granted dependent visas, so would that mean that JET would not make efforts to place internationally married same-sex couples (both successful applicants) near each other?
-
Are there married jets who don't bring their spouse? I'm married and my husband is ok with being apart a year so I can live my dream of living in japan. We have no kids so now would be the time
-
Isn't it interesting that we now can start to talk about that being a reality... :) They'll have to add a new box to the application.
-
What about gay married JETS? :o
-
I think there is a line on the app that asks if you're applying "with" someone, and that is where you would indicate that you're jointly applying with a friend and would like to be placed in the same prefecture, and possibly in the same town. Of course, in your placement preference section, you and your friend should indicate the same place you want to live, i.e. both pick Hiroshima, or both pick semi-rural.
-
I've read that you can apply with a friend and they will try to accommodate you, by putting you close to each other. How exactly does this work?
-
a husband and wife can both apply. If you both get in, then they do put you in the same town with schools that are relatively close to each other and you can live in the same apartment. You wouldn't work in the same school tho - most schools only need one ALT.
-
Can you go as a married couple and both apply as JETS, providing that you both qualify. Will they try and match you to the same school, or at least the same town to teach in? I know chances are you will LIVE together, but in terms of work, do they keep the couple separate?
-
Nope - go to the main JET page - link on my main page - and you'll see that about 40 countries send JETs to Japan every year. The UK is in the top 5 along with the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Ireland.
-
Are you only able to be a JET if your american? 'cause i'm british and i really want to be a JET
-
@chachib3 if you are married and apply with your spouse, I'm pretty sure JET makes every effort to place you in the same town so you can live together. I knew married JETs in Izumo who shared the same apartment, but one had local schools within 10-15 minutes drive and one had schools further away 20-40 min drive. And they'll ask you at the interview questions like "What if one gets accepted and the other doesn't - will you still go?" so you have to think about that.
-
if you are married and both spouses want to work teaching English can they teach and live in the same area or will they be sent to different locations?
-
@myargonauts The spouse could work at a U.S. military base if they are located in Kanagawa Prefecture (for example, Camp Zama or Yokosuka Naval Base).
-
@sethwright Once you're a JET and in Japan, I very much doubt they could/would not allow you to recontract simply because you're gay. But there are much more knowledgable people than me on this topic at the official JET Programme . org forums and there is even a Gay JET support group that someone can point you at where past and present gay JETs can give advice.
-
@myargonauts hey, guess what, it didn't ^^ We are going to Ehime together now :)
-
@KnightsofEmerald I really don't know. Best of luck tho.
-
I've applied with a partner, not married, they didn't ask me anything about it in the interview. Will it go against me?
-
@AmandaKayBrown yeah - and I say "um" way too much. Hard habits to break.
-
@elliblue good question - I don't know the right answer tho. Try posting on the official JET forums at jetprogramme(dot)org or asking about a link to the gay/lesbian support group for JETs - I'm sure they'll know
