I liked this. I don't assume anyone speaks any language anymore. Westerners that speak fluent Japanese, perhaps they ARE Japanese, but of European decent. I am attempting to learn Japanese on my own, at least conversational.

★don't you know that japan adopts jus sanguinis? just like any other asian countries? really the top comment on this video talking as if japan is a jus soli country, its not.
★why would you assume that japanese people speak english to you because of your appearance and presumed Anglophone nationality?
i mean with english you can communicate pretty much to global citizens. its a lingua franca. Almost everyone learned it at school. I never ever thought (i'm SEAn btw) "wow they must be think i'm American (insert other anglophone citizenship here), why would they speak english to me?" whats with this odd way of thinking? -

The JP people didnt get the point of the video at all.

Lol, talk about dense.

Thats common and in my oppinion correct. Foreigners try to hard to get accepted just leave japanese people how they are. Even if your raised in Japan but not looking japanese you get treated like that get it people. Do you see much Foreigners in TV? No because its not common and most of Japanese people just not interested in foreigners.

Japanese are naturally racist. That's sad.

Japanese doesn't even understand the problem?! The problem now looks is WAAAAY more serious to be neglected! Come on, people..! xD
I think the problem is not only because Japanese doesn't understand it but because foreigners or descendants don't stand up like they usually would. This is one of the things Japanese/Asians needs to learn with westerns and yet, those who are there don't act the right way they should.
How will they be able to understand if you simply don't take time explaining? Just to seen as more local? That is wrong.. That works against it.. -
Lol this was funny since I look like a japanese even that im not (my parents are japanese but i born in America).
-
Why did you ask only those who are not knowledgeable? They are not very intelligent people in Japan. People who saw this video do not think that this is Japan as it is. Some people have understanding in Japan.

If I saw a black guy in Japan, I'd still speak to him in English, because where I come from, blacks usually speak English, until he tells me otherwise. I need to communicate with him somehow to figure out what he can and he can't speak and it makes semse to use at least one languahe to find out what language they speak. I am just as guilty as all of the Japanese who assume the wrong language here. Though I never do it as badly as them.

While everyone is saying they lack exposure and are naive and things like that, I think they just can't relate to anyone because they are in general an introverted society that focuses on rational choices and conformism. They also focus on acdemics as well and this leads to some lack of social understanding tjats more understood by people living in the west, particularly people who lived in countroes that are a melting pot of cultures. Being racially sensitive is one of their least worries that'll be on their minds. the same goes for China and other Asian countries.

I think the guys here with glasses are so cute

Please read this if you have a couple minutes to spare.
It's not that they're simply "dumb", as many commenters here seem to infer. I have a friend who is considered of "Korean nationality" even if she is second or third generation in Japan AND doesn't speak a tiny bit of Korean. From a non-Japanese perspective, this fact is both unfair and counterintuitive; we might even feel like it's borderline absurd. However, many Japanese people seem to (still) have a full-on identification between nationality and ethnicity, since their country is one of the most homogenous in the world when it comes to the latter. This, combined with the fact that Japanese authorities are extremely strict when giving citizenships away, is the reason why it's so hard for the people interviewed to understand the video*.
So what you are really seeing here is these people trying to wrap their minds around this issue for the first time in their lives: there could be people, with or without Japanese citizenship, who don't look Japanese, but are completely Japanese in culture.
*They've never had to separate the following identity-related concepts before:
-ethnicity/"biological nationality" (I wouldn't even use the term nationality there, but I think I have to, just to be clear).
- citizenship/"official nationality" (what the government provides/recognizes.)
- cultural nationality (in my books, what you actually are, taking into account how you've grown somewhere, what you identify with, what your mother tongue is, etc.)
I hope this was helpful to somebody. Thank you for your time! -
as someone with a Asian background I'm going to say this. This attitude resonates within most Asian societies, Chinese , Indian ,ECT. we would be amazed to see a Westerner fluently speak our language. And even if they lived in China or India, Japan since birth.... They would never be considered part of that nationality. The only reason we see it more from Japan is because more Westerner s are fascinated by the country and Japan it's culture. They travel more regularly there, and they pick these things up quite quick. Sadly I believe a decent amount of all Asians possess a xenophobic attitude, that's because they have been raised in a strict traditional culture with family. But Japan is on the receiving end because it's more popular, and has only been open since the last hundred years or so.

I always thought of Japanese as very smart people, the ones in this video are clearly the exception to that.

Very positive people

I never thought a nation can be so naive about discrimination....I'm ashamed of my country!!!!

I have a similar problem in Hong Kong. When the chinese students or teachers see or hear me write or speak a simple phrase or sentence, they look surprised. How did I survive in school if i didn't at least know some chinese? it's quite irritating.
