Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike launched the construction of a $1.5 billion (€1.4 billion) Olympic Stadium for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Sunday. The new building will be built on the ashes of the demolished 1964 stadium. The ceremony ended with a video of blueprints for the stadium, which will be completed in November 2019. Initial work on the stadium was delayed because the first design was too expensive and there were complaints over its size and appearance. However, Governor Yuriko Koike pledged to host an environmentally friendly and cost-effective Olympics and has reprimanded organisers who failed to monitor costs responsibly. SOT, Shinzo Abe, Japan's Prime Minister (Japanese): "With the world's best universal design, it will be adopted to the harmony of the natural environment in Japan. We have imagined such a new stadium." SOT, Shinzo Abe, Japan's Prime Minister (Japanese): "To inherit the history of the outer gardens of the Meiji Shrine and the old National Stadium, we believe that it will be reborn as it can send sports and culture into the new age." SOT, Yuriko Koike, Governor of Tokyo (Japanese): "Sports bring us excitement, when we see athletes pursuing the limits of human ability. It also improves health, with local promotion for the country and a huge economic effect, such various effects and joy including the connection between people beyond the differences of the sense of values."
