After recently abandoning their original plans for the Tokyo Olympic stadium, the Japanese government has announced that they will begin construction based on a new design early next year. The new design has yet to be chosen, and the government is calling for entrants to pitch their designs through an international contest. The original stadium was set to be completed in time for the 2019 world cup, but the cancelation has pushed that deadline back. The first batch of plans fell through after the estimated construction costs for the approved project doubled before workers could break ground. Japan's minister of education and sports, Hakubun Shimomura, has expressed interest in putting together a third party investigation as to how this happened in an attempt to prevent future issues on the matter.
