Alle 6.46 (ora italiana) un fortissimo terremoto di magnitudo 9.0 della scala Richter (precedentemente definito di 8.9) si è abbattuto vicino alle coste di Honshu, in Giappone. Il terremoto ha fortemente scosso i palazzi di molte città nipponiche, provocando anche alcuni morti. Il sisma ha inoltre sollevato una tale massa d'acqua da creare un'onda di tzunami alta oltre i 4/6 metri (in alcune zone alta anche 10 metri) che in un tempo estremamente ridotto si è abbattuta sulla costa nord est del paese, inondando anche una parte dell'entroterra e trascinando con se imbarcazioni, autoveicoli ed interi edifici. Attualmente (14 Marzo) l'aeroporto internazionale di Narita, a Tokyo, risulta aperto, mentre il traffico ferroviario è parzialmente paralizzato. Quello dell'11 Marzo è stato per il Giappone il sisma più potente da quando esistono strumenti di misurazione.
