Anyone who diggs this track really-really-REALLY needs to check out the newly released WEATHER REPORT: THE LEGENDARY LIVE TAPES 1978-1981. ELEGANT PEOPLE is there. That track from the WR 1978 Japan Tour, recorded on 6/23/78 at Festival Hall in Osaka, SMOKES this one, if that's possible. Then as now, so many bands realized that if they were going to tour Japan they had to bring their A-Game to the stage. WR usually didn't disappoint. The night I saw them in Shinjuku (1980) they were on fire and if one person stood out it was Pete Erskine for the amount of energy he put into that 2:20 set.

You realize this is Shorter's piece right? Not Jacos. Also, Jaco didnt make the band. Im a Jaco fan myself, but there were many great tracks without him.

If Sony/Legacy has this available on iTunes, I'm downloadin' it! One of my favourite jams from Wayne Shorter with a touch of Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius.
This is one of those songs that I can listen to REPEATEDLY and not get tired of it.
These cats were indeed the best! -
Divine!

My dear Jaco, my dear Joe, my dear AREA; MY DEAR DEMETRIO!!!!!!!!!
-
I got add one cool cat i get a kick out ... Charlie Hunter, but he plays a custom 7-string (formerly 8-string) guitar/bass (3 bass strings/4 guitar), so I don't know, or care if he's categorized as a bass or guitar player, but the combination is still awesome in many ways imho.

I have to agree. To this day to me Jaco's still the coolest cat of 'em all (In many aspects). Felix has also a unique, and inventive style to play which I like, regardless of his father...on his own.

@ The Light: You're correct. They are Video Stills I took from that Offenbach gig video.
-
You could say this or that bass player's got chops, you could maybe say more than Jaco, but which one could improvise like this in such a funky way?
-
I do remember this night when they opened their performance with this. The first note, Jaco's note with harmonics was striking and thougt who was making that note? I really miss them.
-
Sorry, I meant they're from Offenbach, Germany, 1978. Cheers.
-
Those are video stills. Watch his performance of Slang in Reading, PA, 1978 and you'll see it.
-
Is there a place where I can get any of the pictures from 4:03 - 4:10 , they all look so epic!
