That last name stuff is interesting. Here (Israel), everyone is always referred to by their first name. Teacher? First name. Boss? First name. Prime Minister? First name. Lover? First name. Policeman? First name.
My last name is sometimes used as a nickname by those who call me by a nickname, but otherwise, I'm ALWAYS referred to by my first name, and I refer to everyone with their first names at all times. Nobody here had any problems with that, except for a teacher that recently moved over here from the USA. She was shocked that we all called her by her first name, yet we continued and she acclimatized to it. Whenever someone is referred to by their last name, and not as a nickname, they find it very weird, and so do I. -
