I was 8 years old when the Tokyo olypics were on and I used to have to catch a train from Victoria Station (on my own!!) and to kill time while I waited I would go to the small news theatre (cinema) in the concourse and watch Olympic Games reports on Pathe News and Tom & Jerry .. both tunes have stayed with me forever - So glad I found this - An updated version for 2020 would be good!
-
Wouldn't it be truly fantastic if this song was chosen again for the 2020 Olympics
-
I wonder if they will use it in 4 years time !

I WAS 11 YEARS OLD WHEN THE 1964 OLYMPICS (THE 1ST ONE I REMEMBER) WAS IN MY LAST JUNIOR SCHOOL YEAR AND REMEMBER THERE BEING NEWSPAPER CUTTINGS ON THE WALL OF THE ENGLISH ATHLETES ROBBIE BRIGHTWELL ANN PACKER AND MARY RAND AND REALLY LIKED THE TOKYO MELODY (SO MUCH SO I HAD IT ON MY XMAS PRESENT LIST)BUT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT IT WAS A SUNG VERSION BY A JAPANESE SINGER CALLED TSAI CHIN! I DID GET THE RIGHT ONE SOME 8 YEARS LATER AROUND THE MUNICH OLYMPIC GAMES = FROM A SECOND HAND MUSIC SHOP.

I remember the B side as well, a natty little tune played on a toy piano, but can't remember the title.

As regarding the comment I read just now from pintofkimberley, it actually was an early 1980s presentation on Radio Luxembourg, a 1960s Top 20, also containing the original 208 jingles thrown in as well, by DJ BA, Barry Alldis, only just months before his albeit untimely death at the age of 50 in 1982.

おもしろいね。逆輸入の盆踊りだ。外国人が見た日本の風景だね。
2020年も、こういう曲が出るかもね。 -
Wow, this is one of my earliest musical memories. Great to hear it again...
-
Thank you for uploading this, I have been trying to find out what it was. I was mistakenly thinking, it was the 1968 Winter Olympics that I had enjoyed this theme from, in my defence I was only young. :)

Que de souvenirs !! A l'époque (1964), cet album de Helmuth Zacharias avait connu le succès puisqu'il était l'un des précurseurs de l'adaptation de la musique nippone à la manière européenne. Un plaisir de le retrouver sur Youtube.
-
I can remember the BBC used this music to open the Olympic TV programs

This is the earliest example I have ever heard of the use of "The Glitterbeat" so loved by Chinn & Chapman, Garry Glitter, The Sweet, Quatro, Mud etc in the 1970's. Here we have it back in 64! Very cool tune..

Its amazing that in the early 60s products from Japan were regarded as a joke...even worse than 'made in Hong Kong'...it was a byword for cheap tat and anything electrical was going to burn the house down...and it did! Now we crave Sony or Toyota etc......

I too have fond memories of this song. It's good to hear it again. Thanks!
