Dada la avalancha de quejas que se produjo por parte de los fans de esta serie Gainax se vio obligado a rehacer el final de la serie, creando una película de dos partes conocida como Death & Rebirht que debía sustituir los episodios 25 y 26 de la serie los cuales finalmente condujeron a esta película. Death & Rebirth están reconstruidos en la primera parte de la película The End of Evangelion. Comienza de una manera muy similar, con el Ángel final derrotado, y pasando a ser el enemigo la organización SEELE y sus planes para los Evas y NERV... y de hecho para toda la raza humana. En esta película parece ser que por fin se da fin a esta serie, para unos una obra maestra, para otros una serie pésima, pero que desde luego no deja a nadie indiferente. Aunque algunas situaciones se muestran de diferente forma, tales como ángulos de camara, historias alternativas, etc. Shinji Ikari llega a Tokyo-3, buscado por su padre Gendo. Después de la primera batalla, en la que salió victorioso, Misato lo lleva a su casa para que viva con ella, vaya a la escuela y trate de tener una vida normal.Tras todo esto comienzan a aparecer nuevos ángeles.
