In January 2014 I went on my first ski trip to Japan. Hakuba is on the main island of Honshu, West of Tokyo. The Siberian winds crossing the Sea of Japan bring mountains of snow - a metre deep is considered a really poor year. Hakuba is not as renowned for powder as Niseko further north, but has better weather, is higher, and has no less attraction to Australians and New Zealanders.
