Please join the Harvard College Japan Initiative as we reminisce on the successful completion of H-LAB 2012. This upcoming summer, the H-LAB Organizing Committee will hold the third iteration of the H-LAB Conference, a summer school for high school students. Our mission is to immerse students in the liberal arts, the hallmark principle guiding curricula at Harvard College, over the course of nine days. As we have done in the past, we hope to open the possibility of studying in universities abroad and to explore international careers through interaction with students from Harvard College as well as students from Japanese universities and other esteemed guests. This program will bring together 25 students from Harvard College, who hail from multiple countries, under the same roof with high school participants. As William Fitzsimmons, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard College, has consistently emphasized, the liberal arts as it manifests itself at Harvard cannot be complete without a residential component. Japanese high school students will be integrated into the residential community and actively encouraged to participate in meaningful interaction that goes "beyond borders"—interaction that transcends age, school, nationality, or any other borders that could impede free interaction. Through this sharing of information, high school students will gain role models for their future and the possibility of matriculating at foreign universities, including Harvard. It will also foster a more international mindset. The academic component of H-LAB is liberal arts seminars designed and run by Harvard students, with a 2:1 student--teacher ratio in each seminar allowing maximal support for immersion in an unfamiliar learning style. Content-wise, high school students will be able to choose several seminars from over 20 unique offerings made culturally relevant with the cooperation of Japanese university students. This will give participants the opportunity to experience a genuine liberal arts education and appreciate the diversity that stems from it. Furthermore, we will reinforce these themes through forums and participatory group work led by distinguished speakers such as Dr. Hirotaka Takeuchi, Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University and Professor at the Harvard Business School.
