Greatest Scenes in Movies, EVER : "Thirty Seconds over Tokyo" | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
From the movie "Thirty Seconds over Tokyo" we see pilot Ted Lawson fly at tree top level into Tokyo and bomb four military targets. This was shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Japanese command had assured their people that Tokyo was unreachable by attack. The cinematography is world class and we can see where George Lucas was inspired for the low level flights over the Death Star in "Star Wars".

When they went out to check on the Duck at night and Lawson said he was turning in, that whole set looked so fake. The planes looked plastic, and the carrier never moved or pitched. By the way, Admiral Halsey was played by that fine actor Morris Ankrum who saluted Doolitle. Also, the sailor who gave Thatcher the candy bar was long time actor Wally Cassel who was convinced by his friend Mickey Rooney to change his Italian name from Waldo Cassarato, or something like that to Wally Cassell. Wally Casell passed away last year at the ripe old age of 102 in Arizona. Wow!(also in Sands of Iwo Jima and White Heat)

Great film that really highlighted the era from the music to the story. It made you want to be part of that era. Now, can anyone tell me how they got the film showing the Ruptured Duck flying into that bombed out area by Davy Jones? Did MGM hire pilots to fly those B-25's? What about the hedgehopping when the Duck and others were flying and that train blew its whistle. Where did they get that film to put in front of the actors when they were bombing Tokyo? I also am wondering how they filmed that bomber flying under the Bay Bridge. Was it a duplicate Ruptured Duck that was flown by stunt men? Yes, Alec Baldwin was terrible as Doolittle, but so was the film. Afleck and the other guy flying the P-40's looked like stupid jocks having a nice time!

I got to fly in a B25 a few years ago. Sat up front behind the pilots and got to crawl up front to the nose while in flight(that is one small tunnel!). Amazing view and video'd the flight from the nose. How small the plane was inside. Crawled back to the pilots compartment and watched the rest of the flight from there. My dad flew the b25...sat there with his dog tags and photo of him thinking that he actually sat in the pilot's seat 70+ years ago. Such memories...
