The story's central theme is sadness. The game uses an Active Time Battle system based on those used in early Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger, as well as the dual/triple tech system seen in Chrono Trigger in addition to a Momentum gauge that allows you to store momentum charges that can be used to enhance attacks
I love that you can rename your character! It's one of those nostalgic things that isn't in enough JRPGs these days. It annoyed me a lot that it was missing from the latest Star Ocean game. Faithlessness and Integrity was acceptable as a sequel and kinda average overall as a game.
I agree with you that a good game isn't hampered by being short! If I enjoy a game, I'll replay it endlessly, whether or not it actually has anything in it to make it replayable such as postgame material or alternate endings. This sort of extra content can just get repetitive.
I also agree that a game doesn't need an original idea to have a good story. Most games that advertise themselves as original still remind me of other games.
