Japan Feb. 2, 2016 Tokyo police have arrested a former official of a North Korean school on suspicion of swindling. They also suspect he played a role in covert operations against South Korea. The 49-year-old man was a deputy chief of the business department of the pro-Pyongyang Korea University in a suburb of Tokyo. Korean residents of Japan study there. Police suspect the man of swindling a USB drive and other items worth about 100 dollars in 2012. He allegedly used a credit card with a false name. Police also believe the man helped teach and fund North Korean agents for operations against South Korea. The police say he met a North Korean agent in China, along with a South Korean agent who was convicted by a South Korean court. They also say they found documents and activity reports, including instructions for spying on South Korea sent from a North Korean agency, when they searched his home in Tokyo last June over another allegation. A spokesperson at the school told NHK that the former official submitted a resignation in June for personal reasons. But the spokesperson declined to comment on the arrest, citing a lack of information.
