I am a Tokyo based video blogger, a permanent resident who has spent my entire adult working life in Japan (16 years now and counting). I make videos to try to bring Japan, and the rest of the world closer together, featuring aspects of Japanese culture, current events and trends for those abroad, and to share how the world sees Japan with Japanese. I also love gadgets, news, music and photography, and pull these elements into my Japan themed videos. Most of my videos are in English, but Thursdays are "Japanese Day" when I make content in Japanese. I also make videos in both languages with tips on getting better at the other language. Subscribe to watch regular vids!

I would say you should get a generator. I currently live in Florida and can't live without it during the hurricane season.

Thanks for the information.

Regarding telecommunications. I've thougth we should have mobile phone contracts from at least two companies instead of everyone in the family using the same company. For example, what if Softbank service goes down but NTT Docomo service is fine at the same time? Or vice versa. It's the same for access to the Internet.
A landline plus mobile phone contracts from at least two companies could be a good minimum requirement for a household. This would mean you as a household wouldn't get the cheapest price per month in total, but we can accept that for increased safety. Here in Finland I wouldn't care about getting this increased safety, but in Japan I will have to care. -
Thank you for the video. I'm moving to Japan later this year and it certainly helps to get advice from people who already live there.
I have a habit of sleeping just in my short underpants. I do it year-round here in Finland as our houses stay warm also in the Winter as we have good heat insulation and central heating systems.
Earthquakes are not a problem here as they are so small that we don't usually notice them without sensitive measuring equipment. I've never noticed one in my life here, but I've experienced an earthquake that lasted for several minutes in Japan in 2014.
Anyway, my Japanese girlfriend who lives in the Greater Tokyo Area said I have to stop sleeping in just my short underpants in Japan because it's too dangerous if there is an earthquake. She said I have to wear long pants and a shirt with long sleeves all year round because I might have to run out of the house in just a few seconds so I wouldn't have time to put more clothes on.
I think she has a point. I haven't actually decided what I will do regarding this. Following her advice could be the smart and safe thing to do, however, I worry I will feel too hot in the Summer.
In the Winter I may actually follow her advice just because the typical Japanese house can get quite cold in the Winter - shockingly cold compared to our houses here in Finland! -
I remember after the 2011 Earthquake I had to line up at a public telephone for about half an hour to tell my family I was OK!

This video is a good reality check, thanks for putting up all the tips. The dolphin thing is pretty creepy and quite morbid... Were they just beached or actually dead and beached?
-
Thanks for the informative video. It's a good thing to keep in mind, especially in natural disaster prone areas!
-
Thanks Hiko. I'm in Texas, so we have the occasional tornado roll through. Yee-haw :D
-
I am super worried about this because I want to move into cheap student housing and from what I gather it was made in the 70s out of Balsa wood and prayers.
-
You are so right, I should write down phone numbers because I actually don't know any phone numbers off by heart.
-
easiest emergency toilet to make is a 5 gallon bucket, garbage bag, and a toilet seat(unless you're good at the hover maneuver) I used to use that when out hunting deer
-
My Plan: Come stay at Hiko's until it all blows over!. Hopefully the dolphins are wrong, but thanks Hiko for the heads up.

That dolphin thing is scary ;_;
Great tips! -
Stay safe :D
