However, Caesium 137 is light and is much more dangerous it will get up into the upper atmospheres and can be carried thousands of miles especially over oceans due to high velocity prevailing winds. Potassium Iodide does nothing for Caesium however chelation through chelating agents does. Cilantro and Garlic are the best natural chelating agents their respective Oils and Supplements being more so. Add them to your daily diet over the next month and if at all able get a Radiation Card to test the Atmosphere mainly at the concern for children since REMs are more dangerous for lighter people. The biggest radioactive risk right now comes from the byproducts of fission. Tokyo Electric Power Company, which runs the reactors, has reported releases of both iodine-131 and cesium-137, the two primary radionuclides that nuclear fission creates. According to Hutchinson, strontium-90 has also been detected, and the presence of cesium and strontium indicates fuel melting. Cesium concentrates in muscle, strontium (like calcium) in bones, iodine in the thyroid. And this is why potassium iodide won't do a thing to help with the other radioactive isotopes found in nuclear reactors. That includes both the uranium and/or plutonium fuel, as well as the fission products like strontium-90 and radioactive cesium. Strontium-90 is a real problem, since it tends to concentrate in the bones (and teeth), and it has a much longer half-life than I-131. Unfortunately, calcium is so ubiquitous in the body that it's not feasible to do that uptake-blocking trick the way you can with iodide. The only effective way to deal with strontium-90 is to not get exposed to it. Once in the body, these radioactive materials continue to decay, releasing harmful gamma and beta radiation. Plutonium, also present, gives off alpha radiation. Rearranging the DNA in the human body leads to cancer... lukimea... etc Iodine-131 moves through the atmosphere more easily than cesium-137, but it has a half-life of only eight days... That means it would be all but gone within weeks. Cesium-137, on the other hand, attaches itself to particles or debris. That means that eventually cesium-137 will fall out of the air onto the ground, and there it will stay until it decays. Now, if I were in Japan and downwind of the Fukushima reactors, I would indeed be taking potassium iodide pills, and doing so while getting the hell out of the area. (That last part, when feasible, is the absolute best protection against radioactive exposure). But here in North America, we're already the hell out of the area. The only time to take KI pills is when a plume of radioactive iodine is on the way, and that's not the case over here. We'll have plenty of notice if anything like that happens, believe me - any event that dumps enough radioactivity to make it to California will be very noticeable indeed. Let's hope we don't see anything of the kind
