Not to knock Black Flag, they are truly one of the most important and innovative punk bands but the Self-Critical Rebel is standard punk issue. Flipper & No Trend both anti-punk punks bands for example we're tearing this ceiling off which is there with every sub culture. The Dead Kennedys too, most notably Nazi Punks Fuck Off. It's also part of many artists' development when they realize that "living' your art" is a romanticized myth as early punk's self-destructive nihilism demonstrated.

1984 was a great year for Black Flag. Like the comment below me, Black Flag broke down the barriers and showed that Hardcore and Punk in general can be more than three chords and playing as fast as you can.
