*NOW IN HD RETAKE! Finally, I got the opportunity to revisit this historic department store and did a retake of these beautiful gated OTIS elevators! These six elevators were installed in 1933 and have been operated by attendants since the building was opened. According to elevator filmer e233100's latest videos of these elevators (links are near the bottom), they have recently been modernized again into Gen2 in 2013-14. The last modernization according to him was around 1990s when the fixtures were vintage square Lexan push buttons (old footage included in this video as a flashback). Now here's an interesting fact that someone told me. You see a vintage crank in the COP? This is not used to manually controlling the elevator. Instead, it is used to start and "lock" the elevator. After the doors closed, she pushes the floor button, turns on the crank and the elevator moves. When it stops, she turns the crank back to it's original position (neutral). In this position, the elevator won't move unless to turn the crank. No matter how many floor buttons you pressed, it won't move. Notice that after the doors closed and some of the floor buttons have been pressed, the elevator didn't move. The solution of this crank, I believe, is to prevent people from operating the elevator by their own except the attendant, giving the fact of how historic these elevators are and attendants have long been operating these elevators. The crank is like a lock switch to me, or whatever you want to call it. In this case, this is an EXTREMELY RARE configuration in an OTIS Gen2! I have never seen a modernized historic elevator like this anywhere else before! I surely hope that these elevators will not be replaced into boring modern ones and would still be running for more than 100 years.
