As Japan continues its search and rescue efforts, the nation is suffering around the clock major aftershocks of magnitudes so strong that coastal residents continue to live in fear. After Japan's delay 8.9 earthquake struck Friday, dozens of major aftershocks continue. Now within the last twenty four hours, Japan's earthquake aftershocks, of 5.0 magnitude or greater, are numbering into the hundreds. Today alone there have been several earthquake aftershocks in excess of 6.0 magnitude and many even more severe. Japan suffered a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shortly before noon local time Saturday. The quake had a shallow depth of fifteen miles below the earth's surface. It registered one hundred miles east of Honshu, one hundred miles east of Sendai, and two hundred miles from Tokyo. This aftershock registered in the same location as the countless other aftershocks today. Two hours earlier, Japan shortly after 10 am local time Saturday suffered a 6.4 earthquake as well. But with aftershocks of 6.8 magnitude or comparable, there is always the concern of additional wave activity. How does one gauge if no wave activity is seen? The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a news bulletin after today's earthquakes stating all tsunami warnings have been cancelled but that wave activity may continue. "A widespread destructive tsunami has occurred and tsunami waves have now crossed the entire Pacific. For all areas when no major waves are observed for two hours after the estimated time of arrival or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then local authorities can assume that the threat is passed."
