BEAUMONT - Interstate 10 West and one lane of I-10 East remain closed Wednesday near MLK in Beaumont, one day after a truck overturned and spilled a flammable, hazardous chemical on the highway.Police and firefighters estimate it could be 10 or 11 a.m. Wednesday before cleanup crews finish removing the chemical and they're able to reopen the highway.A box truck carrying tetrochloroethylene flipped onto its side at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, spilling about 20 gallons of the chemical onto the road. The chemical is often used in dry cleaning.Crews were able to get the truck upright Tuesday night but the cleanup continues. The hazardous materials cleanup crew contracted to do the work is using absorbant to remove the chemical.The driver suffered cuts and bruises to his face.Law enforcement officers are re-rerouting traffic coming from the east. Drivers near FM 105 in Vidor are being re-routed north to Evadale.  Stay with KFDM News and kfdm.com for updates. (6pm Tuesday) BEAUMONT - by Ashley Gaston/KFDM News - A truck carrying a flammable chemical has overturned on Interstate 10 near MLK in Beaumont. It forced police to close the westbound lanes.   The truck driver lost control Tuesday afternoon and police say the westbound lanes could remain closed for several more hours while they clean up the chemical.  A number of people stopped and helped pull the trucker to safety. "This gentleman that wrecked here veered into my lane and I thought he was going to correct it," said Thomas Grounds.The driver skidded before his truck overturned on Interstate 10 East near the MLK exit."The wind caught him and I saw it start tipping over," said Grounds.Thomas Grounds was driving this white car.  He saw the entire scene unfold."If I wouldn't have put on my brakes I would've been crushed," said Grounds.Once he parked his car, Grounds and several other people rushed over to help the driver."We helped pull the driver out. He said his leg was hurting, his head was hurting and he was bleeding out of his mouth," said Grounds.Paramedics took the driver to a hospital. Police say his injuries are minor.The driver was carrying a flammable liquid that can cause breathing problems."Very toxic. About 20 gallons spilled. It's now contained," said Captain Earl White. Police blocked off traffic and kept everyone 150 feet from the accident.First responders allowed the drivers that were behind the traffic accident to turn around and go the opposite way to find an alternate route of travel."They were close. We've re-routed them and evacuated them for their caution," said White."Lucky to be alive. The first thing I did was call my wife and let her know," said Grounds.A phone call to his family after he took a few minutes to help save another driver.
