(1/2) Tokyo - Morning Opening at Tobu Department Store: The Bowing Rite | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
Japanese department stores are institutions in themselves. Usually enormous, well-designed, and chock-full of merchandise, they have about everything you can imagine. One of the most wonderful aspects of the Japanese department stores is the courteous service. If you arrive at a store when its doors open at 10:00am, you'll witness a daily rite: Lined up at the entrance are staff who bow in welcome.

@Mandravedere its called GOOD MANNERS, u seem so cultured sensitive
I did avoid the rush. In fact, I was the one and only person on the escalator and, at each and every floor, there was a manager and two workers standing there, watching me slowly rise to their level. Under such scrutiny, the ride up seemed to last an eternity. As I arrived, they would greet me and bow deeply until I had walked past them. It was really embarrassing and my face became redder and redder on each floor until, when I finally reached my destination, I was completely worn out and drained of all energy.
I'm sure there must have been greeters in front of the elevator on each floor, too, but I'm sure it would have been nowhere near as stressful in a crowd.
