電車の北斗星に乗りましょ! The Rare Overnight Train in Japan - trip from Tokyo to Sapporo in Winter | Tokyo
Information | History | View | Sightseeing | Video
unfortunately these trains are no longer in service. Such a huge shame! - The Hokutosei (北斗星) is a limited express sleeping car train service in Japan which connects Ueno Station in Tokyo and Sapporo Station in the northern island of Hokkaido, taking approximately 16½ hours. It is operated jointly by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido).

Great video! Nice lounges and dining car!

1600 yen for breakfast on such a nice train is not expensive at all in Japan. Vending machine coffee is double the price of that in my country but cigarette is half.
-
Interesting. Did they offer sashimi or even sushi?
-
The train only operates on seasonal months from 14 March 2014 and will due to be completely discontinued on August 2015.
There is another sleeper train to Sapparo from Ueno station in Tokyo but will be discontinued in Spring 2016 and the bullet train will start operating in Spring 2016 to Hokkaido Island -
isn't that is the one that takes 16 hrs to get to Sapporo?
-
I hope JR thinks twice before discontinuing it - not everyone wants to be whisked from point A to point B at break neck speed !
This train is quality where tourists and locals can enjoy the journey in comfort and luxury even. -
How do they manage to balance such wide cars on such narrow track?
-
How long is the total journey from Tokyo to Sapporo? Thanks :)

Awesome. Years ago, when I lived in Kyushu, I took the Miyazaki-Tokyo overnight version of this train. It now runs in Thailand! I wonder where these Hokkaido trains will finish out their days.....
